Poëzie is een multimediaal genre dat in vele vormen buiten het boek bestaat, al doen de literatuurwetenschap en de literaire kritiek soms anders vermoeden. Poëziefestivals trekken volle zalen, cafés zitten vol voor poetry slams, op het internet wordt volop lyrisch geëxperimenteerd, muurgedichten sieren tientallen steden, Gedichtendag is uitgebreid tot een Poëzieweek, vorig jaar kreeg België voor het eerst een Dichter des Vaderlands en dit jaar is de eerste Dichter der Nederlanden benoemd.
