Julia Neugarten | Anchoring and Innovating Classical Motifs in Fanfiction. In my PhD-project, Anchoring and Innovating Classical Motifs in Fanfiction (2022-2026), I analyze how motifs from Classical Antiquity are transformed in fanfiction – stories written by and for fans, inspired by existing stories, and published online, for free. Through my analysis, I aim to better understand the transformative potential of fanfiction as well as the significance and relevance of Antiquity to contemporary online communities. I combine close reading, narratology, and stylistics with methods from computational literary studies and digital humanities.
