On Friday, 23 May, Bernard Lahire (University of Lyon) will give a masterclass on “New Sociologies of Literature”. Lahire is an influential sociologist who wrote, among other things, books on Kafka, Bourdieu and the double life of writers. The title of Bernard Lahire’s  lecture is “The Plural Actor: A Sociological Approach to the Life of Writers”. During the first part of the masterclass, Lahire will talk about his approach to study the plural lives of actors in general and those of writers in particular. He will also share his thoughts on the notion of “the literary game” as opposed to Bourdieu¹s notion of “the field”.

Participants will be asked to read three texts from Lahire prior to the meeting: “Towards a sociology at the level of the individual” (2003); “The Double Life of Writers” (2010); “Specificity and independence of the literary game” (2012).

After his lecture, there will be room for discussion and questions regarding the value of Lahire’s insights for the participants’ own research. The discussion moderator is Liesbeth Korthals Altes (University of Groningen).

You can apply for the masterclass by sending an e-mail to Alex Rutten (alex.rutten@ou.nl).
