After Hiroshima: Cultural Responses to the Atomic Bomb  a cultural week around the thematics of the atomic bomb. How did artists, writers, film makers, and activists respond to the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and their aftermath, and how do they relate to nuclear issues today? After Hiroshima highlights some of the different responses to these questions by bringing together film screenings, performances, lectures, visual art, and even a ‘nuclear game.’ The event takes place across the city center of Groningen from 7-13 September 2019.

You are kindly invited to the following talk by renowned South African author, Eben Venter, on 23 September from 18:30 – 19:45 in the context of Week van de Afrikaanse Roman, and in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts, University of Groningen and the Chair in South African Literature, Culture, and History (University of Amsterdam).

“The relationship between the text and the photographs is . . . oblique: it is as oblique as the word for the colour blue in Xhosa, luhlaza okwesibhakabhaka, the literal meaning of which is ‘green as the sky’; it is also as oblique as the translation of the sexual experience into words.” – from Eben Venter’s “Artist Statement”

“Translate Yourself” – this is Eben Venter’s provocative invitation to his lecture, reading, and highly praised photographic exhibition. The 49 photographs he will display were the inspiration for his most recent novel, Green As the Sky is Blue, which was published in 2018. An audacious exploration of sexuality, translation, and the experience of exile, Green As the Sky is Blue puts Eben Venter, who is a celebrated author in Afrikaans, among a select few writers who have written literary fiction in more than one language.

Eben Venter is the author of ten works of fiction in addition to Green As the Sky is Blue. Those translated into Dutch include Ik Stamel Ik Sterwe and Dans aan het einde van de dag. Having left South Africa in 1986, Eben Venter lives on the East Coast of Australia.

Solidariteit tussen generaties

Het ROSANNA Fonds voor Vrouwen is opgericht door Rosi Braidotti en Anneke Smelik, met als doel het stimuleren van het academisch onderwijs voor getalenteerde vrouwen aan de Universiteit Utrecht.

Rosi Braidotti is filosofe, Universiteitshoogleraar en oprichter en founding director van het Centre for the Humanities aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Zij is zeer toegewijd aan het ondersteunen van de ontwikkeling van vrouwen en van sociaal duurzame systemen. Anneke Smelik is theoretica cultuur en media en hoogleraar in Visuele Cultuur op de Katrien van Munster-stoel aan de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen. Zij heeft een achtergrond in Women’s Studies en een levenslange toewijding aan de rechten van vrouwen.

Het ROSANNA Fonds voor Vrouwen richt zich op vrouwelijke onderzoekers die zich bevinden op kruispunten in hun carrière. ROSANNA biedt hen financiële ondersteuning om de volgende professionele stap te bereiken: een beurs voor een PhD of post-doc, hulp bij publicaties of buitenlandse studiereizen, steun bij het verkrijgen van een vaste aanstelling of hoogleraarschap, et cetera.

Vluchtelingstudent

In overleg met de ROSANNA Adviesraad is een jaarlijkse beurs van €2.500,- voor een vluchtelingstudent opgestart. Deze beurs kwam tot stand in samenwerking met de Stichting voor Vluchteling-Studenten (UAF) Het UAF steunt al jarenlang vluchteling-studenten aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Het ROSANNA Fonds voor Vrouwen kijkt uit naar een lange samenwerking en ondersteuning van hun goede werk.

Op 6 maart 2017 reikte het ROSANNA Fonds voor Vrouwen de eerste officiële beurs uit aan een vrouwelijke student: Atefeh Cheheli Sobi. Zij accepteerde de beurs namens de Stichting voor Vluchteling-Studenten.

De eerstvolgende deadline voor het ontvangen van aanmeldingen voor een ROSANNA Fonds Beurs is 1 december 2019.

Het ROSANNA Fonds voor Vrouwen ondersteunt getalenteerde kansarme vrouwelijke studenten en onderzoekers met hun carrière aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Het fonds biedt vrouwelijke studenten en onderzoekers financiële steun om hun academische ambities te verwezenlijken. Het ROSANNA Fonds voor Vrouwen zet zich in om hoger onderwijs toegankelijker te maken voor vrouwen, zodat geen enkele getalenteerde vrouw buiten de boot valt door een tekort aan financiële middelen.

Beyond Boundaries: Authorship and Readership in Life Writing

Until now little attention has been paid to the boundaries between life writing for adults on the one hand and life writing for young readers on the other. Beyond Boundaries will explore this aspect of life writing. This conference will consider how and why studying the reception and audiences of life writing for both adults and young readers is important.

Another issue that has not received much attention in life writing research is the boundary between life writing by adult authors and life narratives by young people. How do young life writers relate to narratives by adults? How similar or different are the ways in which adult and young writers engage in modes of self-representation? And what is the influence of social media on life writing by young people?

Beyond Boundaries will consider these and other related aspects of life writing.

Keynote lectures will be given by:

Anna Poletti, co-editor of Life Narratives and Youth Culture: Representation, Agency and Participation (with Kate Douglas, 2016) and Identity Technologies: Constructing the Self Online (with Julie Rak, 2014);

PROFESSOR OR ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF COMPARATIVE LITERATURE 

The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent professorship or a fixed-term associate/assistant professorship (tenure track system), depending on his or her qualifications and career stage.

The field of the position is fiction and its history across genre, language and cultural boundaries. The focus areas of the discipline include both the theories and methods of comparative literature as well as literature’s relationship with other arts and society. The appointee is expected to consolidate and promote research and instruction in the discipline as well as public engagement. The appointee must provide instruction related to their research topics, supervise final theses, master’s theses, research conducted by postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers, lead research projects and promote the social impact of research results in their field. The applicant’s wide-ranging theoretical, historical and geographical expertise is considered an asset, as are diverse language skills. The position emphasises the interaction between literature, arts and cultures. 

The professor or assistant/associate professor will work at the Department of Philosophy, History, Culture and Art Studies of the University of Helsinki. The group of disciplines includes comparative literature, aesthetics, musicology and theatre research.

QUALIFICATIONS

An appointee to the position of assistant/associate professor within the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant/associate professorships shall demonstrate their capability and motivation as regards an academic career through publications and other means.

An appointee to a full professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and possess top-level scholarly qualifications and experience in the supervision of scientific research, along with the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching as well as to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary to serve as academic leaders.

When assessing the qualifications of each applicant, attention will be paid to both scholarly and teaching qualifications. Scholarly qualifications include scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience as well as international elected positions. When considering the teaching qualifications of each applicant, attention will be focused on teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as participation in doctoral education. The applicant’s leadership and interaction skills as well as activity in the academic community will also be taken into account.

To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have good English skills. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish or Swedish, he/she is expected to acquire moderate proficiency within a reasonable time after the appointment. Support for language studies is offered. 

SALARY

The salary for the position will be based on levels 8−10 (professor) and 7 (assistant/associate professor) of the requirement scheme for teaching and research positions in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal performance will be paid. Annual gross salary for a full professor varies between 64,000 and 96,000 euros, and for an assistant/associate between 50,000 and 68,500 euros, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. Standard Finnish pension benefits and occupational health care are provided for University employees.

Doctoral School Arts, Humanities and Law: ‘Human Action between Satisfaction and Obligation’

Action is a key dimension of the human being. Situated beyond the mere adaptive or instinctive behavior characteristic of most animals, human action is crucially mediated by language. In this regard, the question on action can be formulated as follows: are the main reasons that lead people to act imaginary, symbolic, or grounded in the “real” world? Can we talk about conditions of possibility for human actions as such? To what extent are duty, social responsibility, pleasure and enjoyment constitutive to human action? What does it mean to say that the surrounding world mobilizes us for acting? In order to give an answer to these questions a multi- and  interdisciplinary approach is needed. This course offers PhD-students the possibility of acquiring knowledge and methodologic strategies from different disciplines in order to grasp the complexity of human action.

Call for Papers: Memory, Word and Image: W.G. Sebald’s Artistic Legacies

Artists tend to work across disciplines and “art cannot be disciplined” (Hito Steyerl). Taking the case of W.G. Sebald’s interdisciplinary word and image practice on memory and presences of (migratory) lives as touchstone for our discussions, this conference seeks to foster academic, professional, artistic and public scholarship by exploring cutting-edge interdisciplinary research, findings, techniques, practices and theoretical advances in the areas of memory, word and image. Which role do art and literature play in this regard? The conference turns to a fascinating author, whose work resonates with questions of memory, interdisciplinarity and related artistic practice. Sebald was engaged with the “enigmatic difference” between material truth and historic truth that Jacques Derrida notes in Archive Fever. His literary prose, which exists in the interspace of poetry, novel, essay, (auto)biography, Shoah memorial and travelogue, contains meticulous reflections on non-human entities and natural phenomena. Sebald’s writing generates peculiar relationships between the world of words, objects and the world of images, manifested in his specific practice of embedding images into the tissue of the text. It is not surprising that artists have been among his most prolific interpreters. Sebald’s work serves as a model for current “writing with images” (Elkins) and interdisciplinary projects on the present-day aftermath of wars, as well as today’s plight of migrants and refugees. Exhibitions gathering Sebald’s artistic legacies multiply issues of memory and heritage relevant to this conference theme.

The conference invites scholars, artists and other practitioners with a stake in these questions to present papers, posters or workshops, which critically analyze these issues and especially consider the role of interdisciplinarity in their case studies. Topics include, but are not limited to considering memory and interdisciplinarity in relation to:

  • art’s responses to literature
  • politics of memory, identity and cultural imagination
  • writing with images
  • migration and borders
  • museums and (literary) exhibitions
  • politics of intervention and resistance narratives
  • artistic, writerly and scholarly strategies to deal with post-war realities
  • non-human witnesses of trauma
  • crossing disciplines to slow down reception
